About us

Distributed Systems @ UNIFE is a cross-departmental research group involving the Department of Engineering and the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science of the University of Ferrara, Italy.

Active since 2002, our cross-disciplinary team has been working across various fields, ranging from Big Data, Compute Continuum and Internet of Things (IoT) in Industry 5.0, as well as Digital Twin and Cybersecurity.

One research group, two labs

We are committed to fostering strong connections between industry and academia, tackling practical technological challenges faced by applied computer science and engineering through pioneering approaches and innovative solutions.

The industrial research is carried out by our two labs: Big Data & Compute Continuum Lab and Digital Twin & Cybersecurity Lab.

Research projects

We have completed several high-impact research projects and are currently involved in many regional, national and international programs and thematic networks as well as maintaining ongoing scientific collaborations with prestigious research institutions worldwide.

We develop software and solutions from concept to proof-of-concept, while collaborating with industry partners on concrete use cases to develop tailored products and outputs to improve their performance, always keeping an eye on sustainability and safety

Teaching & Mentoring

Education and training are pivotal for us, as PhD and thesis opportunities are offered on a regular basis to students of both Departments involved, with the goal of shaping future professionals in response to the ever-growing demands of the IT sector.

We nurture an environment of continuous learning, one where our team members and students are stimulated to grow professionally and personally, gaining a competitive edge in their field.

If you are a student interested in conducting an internship with the Distributed Systems research group, please contact: Prof. Cesare Stefanelli, Prof. Carlo Giannelli, Prof. Mauro Tortonesi, Dr. Filippo Poltronieri.
